The history of The Carlu is every bit as fascinating as the space itself. When the Eaton’s department store chain opened Eaton’s College Street in 1930, notable French architect Jacques Carlu was hired to design the seventh floor. It contained an auditorium, the Round Room restaurant, lounges and a private club. When Eaton’s opened the nearby flagship Toronto Eaton Centre in 1977, the building was sold to new owners that initially wanted to demolish the seventh floor and turn it into office space. The City of Toronto was not having it, however and litigation ensued. In 1986, the Court of Appeal for Ontario ruled that an earlier designation of the building under the Ontario Heritage Act protected the floor from demolition. All of this led to the seventh floor being sealed off for 27 years before finally being restored and reopened as The Carlu in 2003. Today, the space acts as a special events venue and hosts concerts, dinners, galas, weddings, fashion shows and other events.
